With the end of summer comes the time for the annual TMF Open, one of the most important fundraisers of the year for The Metropolis Foundation, to continue to support the facilities and continued growth of youth and senior rugby competition in Minnesota.
TMF will again be joining forces with the family of the late Matt Comstock, in hosting the 26th Annual Iceman Open Presented by The Metropolis Foundation on Friday, September 9, 2011 at Columbia Golf Club in NE Minneapolis.
Matt "Combo" Comstock
In 2010 we joined the TMF Golf Classic with the Comstock family's annual Iceman Open in honor of our friend, teammate, brother, son, father, husband, and rugby mate, Matt "Mitchie", "Combo" Comstock.
Matt Comstock was one of the original members of the Metropolis Rugby Club, founded in 1992. As a player, Matt was standout fullback on the XVs side, and played on the nationally ranked 7's sides throughout the 1990s. After his playing career Matt continued to contribute not only to Metropolis, but to Minnesota rugby in various functions as coach, referee, and administrative positions. Matt also founded the South Metro Tigers High School rugby club, now a perennial contender in the fastest growing high school sport in the state of Minnesota. Matt's wife, Debbie Comstock, was also active in the rugby community with the Menagerie women's rugby club, and they both continued to attend rugby events with their son, Lucas.
The Comstock brothers (Philip, Gary, Willie, Mark and Matt) had traditionally organized a golf event in dedication to their late father, Eldon “The Iceman” Comstock, which has been a traditional gathering over the last two decades. The Comstock family has always been a supporter of Matt’s involvement with rugby, and the Metropolis community as a whole, and Matt has recruited many a rugger to participate in numerous Iceman Open events over the years.
Given the significance of both the Iceman Open, and the importance of such a beloved figure in the Metropolis family, the two groups decided to band together in 2010 and organize a joint golf outing, in tribute to Matt, from the Comstock and Metropolis families. The 2010 event was the most successful ever, raising $10,000 for TMF, and $3500 towards the education of Matt's son, Lucas Comstock. We hope to be even more successful with your help in 2011!
